Vita Volunteering: Close to the end

Holy cow! The place was PACKED Saturday. I did returns for a guy who had been there since 8A ... and we didn't even start until 10A ... and he was 3rd on the list. He said he had been there Thursday night, but was turned away because they had reached capacity. So to explain, there are two steps to the process. First, someone like me who has only passed the basic exam (and barely know what the devil is going on) does the return and checks for completeness. Then there is a more experienced volunteer who goes back through and reviews for accuracy, which totally makes sense if you think about it. Anyway, there were 6 of us doing basic taxes, but only 1 reviewer and no one on hand to do taxes for foreign nationals (also an intermediate to advanced capacity). And the list was over 40 by 10:30A. I feel compelled to learn more about taxation just to be able to help more (and to show off that I know how to do taxes) but I really felt awful about having to turn people away. These are entrepreneurs, recent grads, teachers, unemployed, artists, retired, decent people who don't make a lot of money and can't really afford their own accountants in order to get their taxes done. So if you have never considered tax law as a career, do not be deterred. There is room for you in VITA!!!
