Day 72: Goodbye to my nemesis, Contracts

Today was last Contracts class. And true to form Prof. proposed a wild and wacky tale for us to decipher the breach and courses of action. Short version is that his outstandingly expensive, uber cool fridge came with the house he bought 1.5 years ago and it is forever broken. It has a 12 yr limited warranty that really only guarantees he can get the super cheap part for free but have to pay exorbitant labor fees to install it. Out of sheer irritation ... and to stop the vicious cycle ..., he coerces the fridge company into offering him a new fridge ... at a discounted price First price is 6 x too much money. Follow-up offer is dropped to half that. But still annoyed (and not wanting to pay), he contacts the home warranty people, pitches that and why they should be paying to replace the fridge and essentially committed fraud. Not terribly surprising, he won. Was it incredible lawyering? a quick wit and speedy tongue? a solid argument with undeniable logic? No, no, and no. It was the incompetence of the customer service agents that is paying off handsomely to purchase a new refrigerator for Professor Contract's house. And with that I have concluded he has not been *him* besting me this whole semester; it has been my own incompetence. Touché', Professor.
