VITA volunteering
Saturday I officially started volunteering at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at school. It is tax preparation for anyone, everyone who makes less than $50K per year. True, I knew nothing about tax prep before taking the class and exam. Also true, I have no interest in taxation. But I have to tell you, the people who come in are incredibly interesting! Foreign nationals. Recent graduates. Budding entrepreneurs. Struggling 30-somethings. Retirees. I did my first solo return yesterday for a 73yr old African-american woman who had been a surgical tech at Charity. She became part of the 5th class offered because she couldn't afford the $374 tuition at Dillard. It was nice to meet one of the many whose shoulders I stand upon.
