Day 36: Thank you, Martinet Society
Tonight the Martinet Society hosted a 2.5 CLE on the Clark/Chisom v Roemer cases. (If you don't know what those are, look them up and pay close attention to the *current* arguments at the Supreme Court on Civil Rights Act provisions) I listened to panelists Marc Morial, Judge Sylvia Cooks, Judge Gene Thibodeaux, and Alanah Odoms Hebert, to name a few, talk about how they worked to champion the 1990 and 2012 cases in support of fair and equitable representation in districts electing judges using the simple tool of the Voting Rights Act. It is because of their commitment, determination, at times political alliances that Louisiana's judiciary is now 21% minority, 20% female, and a black woman sits on the Louisiana Supreme Court (there is litigation pending on whether she will ascend to Chief Justice). I am encouraged and have a renewed faith that legal knowledge can be used for good! Made a morning of silly contract cases and the promise of torts tomorrow completely fade away. =D
